Tom Bilyeu’s great advice may inadvertently cripple aspiring entrepreneurs.
“It’s already been done before” – is it a cop out reason to not execute or good reason to avoid a business idea?
Some good advice and also the title of Alan Beckers book is “There’s always room at the top.” We hear Tom talk about being the best at a Google talk on YouTube.
Tom Bilyeu thinks success is going to come when you are the best in the world at something – and he’s right.
To back up a bit, if you have an idea, the common thing people want to do is “see if it’s already been done.” However, if you didn’t know if the idea existed, then other people don’t either. Even if the idea is being done (which almost all ideas have been had / done at this point), it’s not being marketed or executed well. You should still do the idea, and perhaps market it better.
Never underestimate the laziness of a human being.
Even the successful hard working person ends up getting lazy or loses passion for what they were doing and they begin their descent. They’re a little less interested, start showing up late (or not at all) to their appointments, and there’s immediately room for someone doing a good job right behind them.
The point is if you feel that an idea has already been done, BUT a differentiating point is hard work, then there’s room at the top.
In terms of being really good, Dan Kennedy said something in passing that belongs on a fortune cookie – “When you’re short on talent, discipline is an excellent substitute.” Discipline is much more of a “choice” than talent can sometimes be. Seinfeld in his show Comedians in Cars talks about how there’s very few people that are truly good at what they’re doing or the upper levels that aren’t doing well (if the industry itself is good – meaning your worm store is never gonna get off the ground, regardless of your talent / effort).
Tom’s statement that if you’re the best in the world you’ll succeed is right, and being the best is a great goal, but that makes many people give up when they believe it’s not possible – because it’s not. No one wants to hear that, but it’s true. However, living in reality is far more powerful than living in la-la you-can-do-it land though.
However, it’s much more believable and realistic to believe that you can be really good, and there’s still a lot of success waiting for the people that hit that level.
